Runes & Divination Sets


The runic system was used initially by Germanic tribes in Central and Eastern Europe from where their use was extended to Scandinavia, Iceland, Northern Europe and the British Isles from about 100 BCE. The runes are a Germanic alphabet used for communication, divination and magick and they are strongly linked to the Norse mythology.

According to this, Odin, the Norse High God, hung wounded from the world tree Yggdrasil (the tree of fate) for nine days and nights. After this time, he saw the reflection of the runes in the water. He picked the runes and they gave him power. Later, he taught the runes knowledge to goddess Freya, daughter of Vanir (Earth God symbolising fertility and fecundity). Heimdall, the keeper and guardian of the Rainbow Bridge, taught the runes to mankind.

There were several different runic alphabets throughout Europe but the most well-known are the Elder, Anglo-Saxon and Younger Futharks. The name FUTHARK, originates from the first letters of the alphabet F, U, TH, A, R, K. Throughout time, the number of letters in the alphabet varied from 16 to 33 and finally to 24, which is the number of runes used today. In 1980's, Ralph Bum's introduction the 25th rune, a blank rune called Wyrd, created much controversy, as there is no historical proof that the ancients even used a blank rune.

The use of Runes, like other divination system, is based on the answers stored in one's subconscious, and during a rune cast one examines the past, the present and the future which is strongly interconnected with one's past actions which determines (as in Norse mythology) one's karma. One should not expect a rune cast to be a "fortunetelling" opportunity.

Before you dive in the wonderful world of rune casting, your new set of runes need to be "charged" with your own personal energy, or vibration. Wear your runes for a while, if possible at the solar plexus, as your personal aura is stronger there, or place them under your pillow.

How to do a Rune Casting

Take your runes in a quiet place and place a white cloth facing North. Hold the runes in your hand and formulate the question in your mind. You should feel compelled to pick up certain runes. Lay them in order on the layout of your choice and turn them over. Once you have interpreted all the runes, take a step back and look at the whole layout to uncover the hidden relationships and partnerships between the runes. This is the most important factor in the final outcome.

Rune Layouts

There are many layouts that can be used for rune divination. The examples below are just a few.

One-Rune Method. Form a question in your mind and draw just one rune. This method is used for straightforward questions, or if you draw it in the morning, an insight can be gained on how your day will unfold.

Three-Rune Method. One of the most widely used layouts to understand the present situation. Various interpretations can be given, such as:

- Yes/No questions: turn all three runes at once. If they are all positive, the answer is Yes, if not, delays may occur.
- Specific information: turn one rune at a time. First rune could be indicating the problem (current situation), second rune could be indicating what can be done, and the third rune could be indicating what the outcome would be if the action suggested by the second rune is followed.

Five-Rune Method. Select five runes and lay them as in the diagram.


The first three runes represent your past, present and future. Turning rune 2 first will show the present problem, then rune 1 will tell you what in the past caused the present situation. Rune 4 indicates the form of help you might receive, rune 5 indicates what aspects of the problem cannot be changed and finally, rune 3 is the result rune.
